Côté Custom Knives A little about myself

Knife making has been a passion of mine, for as long as I can remember. My knives are made for hunting, fishing, and for a collector's personal enjoyment. I'm from Northern Ontario Canada, situated in a small town called Elliot Lake, nestled deep in the bush where hunting, fishing and trapping are a part of the local way of life.

It all started in 1981, while working on the Distant Early Warning line in the Canadian Arctic. A co-worker showed me a knife he made from a discarded saw blade, and plexiglass washers to make the handle. Seeing this handmade knife is what peaked my interest, and got me hooked on creating my own knives.

Like many that's just starting out, I used old truck springs to make my first knives, heated with a torch, and hammered out until it took on the shape of a knife. While the camp cook was off duty I would use his ovens to temper my blades.

Fast forward to today and with the support of my wife, and my backlog of orders I was able to go full time over 10 years ago. I aim to provide a superior cutting tool that offers both beauty & function coupled with great design concepts.

If you don't see exactly what you had in mind, let's talk, chances are I can make it for you. Most days I'm in my shop, so give me a call, I'm here to help.

Materials Only the finest

  • Steel

For my steel I do my best to keep a good variety in stock, I like CPM series by crucible and for Damascus I use Mike Norris and Damasteel from Sweden. I choose my steel for both their toughness and edge holding characteristic. Nothing is more important to me than the steel it's the heart of the knife, and the heat treatment is the soul.

  • Handles

I use a wide variety of handle material, my preference being Stabilized Burls, Stag, Sheep Horn and Mammoth Ivory, for synthetic material I use carbon fiber, micarta and G-10.

  • Gill did a great job! I was really impressed with the knife he crafted for me and enjoyed all the photos he shared throughout the process. This is clearly a gorgeous showpiece that we'll enjoy for a long time. Thank you Gill!
